Thinkings Lately

1.  As pastors, we so often take personally, lack of attendance on a Sunday, as if we are the reason people didn’t show up……we’re not that important!  There are many other elements as to why we have a low Sunday.

2.  Risk is worth it.  Church planters understand this.  It’s ok if it doesn’t get off the ground. Faithfulness is all that is required of you.  Your ministry peers and even mentors might not understand this and could often deem you as a failure……very unfortunate and untrue.

3.  I believe God has far different evaluation processes than we do regarding our success for Him.

4.  Two voices speak to us every day; 1) Do whatever you want, your way.  2) Follow Jesus. Our choice.

5.  We have to lose our lives to gain them.  That could mean all our money, all our time, all our sacrifice, all our dreams, all our comforts, all our choices, and you get the picture.

6.  Warfare is very forgotten.  We often quit when it gets tough.  If the enemy can’t bring you down through drugs, alcohol, immorality, or impropriety, then guess what’s next:  Your family.  Do not fear when it’s uncomfortable at home.  Dig in, go back to Ephesians 6, and wait on God; keep moving!  It’s a part of you signing on as a green beret Christian long ago! Count your blessings- most Christians do not ever have the luxury of realizing they are moving heaven and hell at the same time.  God bless you!

7.  Most pastors can get discouraged quickly on a Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. No reason to, IF, you spoke the truth of the gospel on Sunday, did all you knew to do, and you feel you are where you need to be today.  It’s not your deal, it’s His!  Rest in that.

8.  The addition of extra money can bring on quick relief and immediate change in demeanor, however, the lack of money will create longer term growth in Jesus which we all need to sustain our faith to the end.

9.  Never pack up the equipment until the game is over.

10.  If you can keep hope alive, and can convey it, regardless of your circumstance, you have mastered life!

11.  You can change anything, including your genetic foul-ups……..it takes 21 days to make a habit.  Start with a list today and change what you want.  It will hurt, but it will be worth it.

12.  Large numbers or small numbers don’t necessarily indicate God’s will for you.  It’s much bigger than that.

13.  You are “created in the image of God” meaning you are made for success regardless if you fail……failure never determines WHO you are, UNLESS, you give up!  As long as you are still in the game, you are a winner!!!!!!!  So get back up, limp if need be, take both hands and pick your leg up over the saddle, and ride on; fight on; press on toward the mark!!!

I needed all of this myself!

Why do we feel and have been programmed that to do God’s work as an individual church, we must find a way to “get the credit?” This has no value in advancing the Kingdom; will advance your church, though, for awhile.  This will only last until God is tired of it……..your ministry then becomes stagnant, inner-focused, and plateaued.  As long as we check our “credit” egos at the door, and decide to build HIS Kingdom, rather than ours, the sky becomes the limit.  Remember, it’s all about whether your city is different because your church is in your city, not whether or not people come to YOUR church!

New Traditional Music

Tony Morgan had some great insight along the line of what our new tradition in church music is becoming. Hymns used to be the tradition; now it’s rock and pop in our new churches;  However, according to itunes, 1 in 3 of the top 100 songs in the country is either:

1.  Hip-Hop/Rap

2.  R&B/Soul

Not many churches tapping in yet, huh?  Worship leaders, start adding in this in to your abilities to lead worship.  One-third of the country likes this stuff!  So do I!  Let’s don’t get out of date and become ineffective!

  1. Finally found a u-haul truck to purchase so our loading is now easier.  Unfortunately, it did not have a ramp.  We didn’t know till we got it home.  We are looking for a solution.  Fortunately, now, we only have to touch equipment twice in a weekend.  We’ve been moving it four times.  We already feel the relief!
  2. Weather was terrible………..pouring down rain.  We knew it was inevitable that we would have to adjust and learn to unload and load in the rain.  Our team did an outstanding job!  God’s people are problem solvers.
  3. Worship with Chase Gamble was top-shelf!
  4. We are enjoying watching God work in this new church.
  5. So much to do………need more funding……..need more volunteers.
  6. Would love to have someone cross our path who felt called to our ministry who does set design.
  7. Who out there would take on a carpentry project for us and build a decent size wooden box?
  8. If you’re an aluminum fabricator, would you have interest in building us a lightweight lecturn?
  9. We are gearing up for a year-end school push for our Family Ministry.
  10. June and July we plan for our August Grand Opening!  We launched, now we grand open with four weeks of celebration during the most exciting season of the year.
  11. Looking for a graphics/computer/propresenter person who can work media for us.
  12. We have seen life-change just about every Sunday since we started….what it’s all about!

  • Kim and I totally enjoyed our time with GHC and Catalyst West this week.  How refreshing!  Great coaching network!  New friends too.  Love you J.D.!
  • The energy and excitement leading up to church today, our third service, has been exciting!  Our third week was fabulous!  We need a box truck of our own so we don’t have to load and unload 4 times a Sunday…..killing us!
  • Moxie and his wife, Clarissa, led worship today.  We had some fun!  Songs like:
  1. Salvation is Here
  2. Forever
  3. How Great is Our God
  4. Closer- Breakaway (Kelly Clarkson)
  • Two great friends of ours, John Buckner and Randy Parker were in the band today.  They’re amazing guys!
  • Our team of volunteers at Origin have been tireless.  I notice that they “get” that it’s not about any of us, but for people who don’t go.  Thank you!
  • We’d like to raise $150K this year for Origin Church.
  • Mike Hedden, President of Danley Labs, has become a good friend and we love using his cabinets in our worship.  The best!  Try ‘em!  He just put 6 of the same subs we use in at Willow Creek!
  • We’ve had some great churches, planting organizations, and close friends come alongside us to partner financially for these first 21 months of planting Origin Church….we wouldn’t have gotten going and will not be sustained without them.  Thank you!
  • I can tell you right now, Propresenter software has been a fabulous improvement to anything I’ve ever used in media.  Jordan is doing “the bomb” in making it happen.
  • Waiting for God to show some friends and family from out of state to move here and be a part of this new church….love ‘em!
  • God has been good to us for our first three worship services together;  I want to take a moment and thank all of you that come……and for your kind comments.  We love our people already!
  • We are gearing up for a new series starting in two weeks on stress and pain!  Don’t miss it!
  • Baby dedication is Mother’s Day, May 10.  Email us and let us know.
  • New Volunteers:  Email us and let us know that you would like to serve.  We’ll meet with you individually!
  • A shout out to Doc Womack on our team;  He is a total package encourager to our team, to everyone he comes in contact with, and to me, personally!  A God-send!  Very, very gifted!
  • We showed a funny clip today of comedian Tim Hawkins.  If you haven’t listened to him, you need to; a huge and good laugh!  Kim was doubled-over laughing so hard hearing him this past week.
  • Won’t be long now until our oldest graduates from high school and off to UGA!  We can’t believe it!  We remember when we took our first church and he was the only baby in the nursery; seems like yesterday!  :(
  • I love the hope that’s out there for our lives….when we’re down we realize, it won’t always be this way.  When we’re up, we enjoy as much as we can!
  • Origin Church: Wow!  Can’t believe we get to do this!  Can’t believe God put back together some of us that did ministry together years ago.  Unprecedented!
  • Loving how fresh God seems to me and how real I feel.
  • A shout out to Ryan Fitzgerald for his constant guidance in our journey.  He’s got it all!
  • Looking forward to seeing what God wants to do with Origin Church….stay with us!

Oftentimes church and church people are so judgmental.  I’m one of those that has been around church all my life, but have been rarely impressed.  I can even remember when I was younger and going, I was often bored to death.  I knew there had to be the real, authentic, and transparent Christ-followers and churches out there, but it was rarely found.  One place I did find it was Metro Bible Study at Mount Paran Church back through the 80′s.  It impacted my life.  It was alive with real people doing real life together, failures, victories, and all.  You know why it worked for so many: Transparency and authenticity, no haughtiness nor judgmentalism, but truth spoken in love, and acceptance of people right where they were in life.

If we’ve somewhere talked along the way or you are finding this blog because one of our team has shared Origin Church with you, you have finally discovered a group of people who love you just like you are and know this: We exist for far away from God, agnostic, atheistic, religious, good, unsure of a belief system people who just haven’t seemed to gel in a church of any kind.  You don’t have to change for us!  We understand you! This thing at Origin is all about one thing: Relationships! We believe God has this big and great plan for your life and we’d like to help you discover it. We get where you are because a lot of what you don’t like or are unsure about, most of us have been too at some time or another.  We don’t have all the answers!  You’ve got questions, so do we! We’re on a journey of discovery!  Listen, you could literally come, enjoy the vibe of the environment we have created, meet new friends, feel at home, and never, ever “get-it” about this thing of Jesus Christ, and we’d still love you, befriend you, want our families to be close, and never miss a beat in doing life together.  That, our friends, is the truth!!  We’ll prove it to you!

One of our greatest desires is to serve our city and add value to it, hoping that service will launch an initiative that explodes around the world for the care and concern for others.  Hey, we’re not yet in a position (financially speaking) to help others; we’re launching a new church.  But, we’re doing it anyway.  We’re a partner for another church launching like this in Las Vegas, giving away to our city at Christmas parades and Haunted houses, searching for ways we can give of ourselves to the school systems in a mentoring role to students without fathers, and it’s only just begun. The people that make up the launch team at Origin Church are giving, unselfish, servant-hearted people who join with me in desiring to be a part of love, “crazy-compassion,” and meeting real needs.  Jesus spent more time meeting physical needs than He did doing anything else; that’s us!

It’s been our pleasure this Christmas season at Origin Church to respond in generosity to a big need for a former Georgia State Highway Patrolman who lost his home two Sundays ago to a fire, while his family was attending church.  As we give, God lives more deeply inside all of us.  It always feels good to walk vicariously in someone else’s shoes.  Lift up this family this Christmas…it could have been you!
