New Churches

We’ve got good friends in an Atlanta suburb with a two year old new church plant.  His statement to me is that when they planted, they were the only ones using road signs to let people know they were there.  Now, 8 more churches have planted and do the same thing on the same corners of the road. You know what, he’s alright with that!  You know why?  Because he knows that we are closing more churches each year in America than we are opening….that’s why!  We should realize that every church is distinct, has it’s own personality, and it’s own “green beret” expertise.  We should rest in that, glory in that, and advance the cause together, not with feelings of jealousy or envy.  No time for that. If you fill up a neighbors church, wonderful!  If they fill up yours, wonderful!  We all end up at the same place!  Unfortunately, ego gets involved, and those things have to be checked at the door of your calling because there is no room at the table for this junk!

Thanks to Paul Peterson, he’s just stated what we all feel, have felt, or will feel as a church planter.  I don’t think anyone can improve on this blog: http://paulpetersonlive.com/2009/02/10/starting-something-new/

Our new friend Kristen Avery said it well; “If your new church starts and it’s just one family that God had in mind to be impacted by the church, then you have done what God asked you to do.”  We often forget the obedience factor, the bigger picture factor, and the Kingdom factors. Let us not beat ourselves up over what’s not happening, but let us be encouraged by what is happening!

Our team has been on the road most Sundays visiting other church plants……….it has been a real treat!  I have never had the opportunity to be in so many different churches.  It’s really shown me that strategic evaluation should be a large system in our churches.  We’ve learned a lot!  What I mean is, get out of your church and go visit, and you will come back with a better view of your own ministry.  What happens is, what we do works for a good while, and we keep doing the same thing, because it’s comfortable and our people seem to embrace it, but, it slowly and surely becomes ineffective and we don’t even know it.  Things in our world change everyday in small increments because generations are changing.  The only way to see it, is to get away from your own church.  You will then become more effective.  Keep this in mind:  Don’t ever say, “It’s just not me.”  It is you, IF, it means adding value and reaching people.  I like Vince Antonucci’s statement:  “We’ll do anything short of sin to reach people.”

We sense God at work in N.W. Georgia and Chattanooga……we are launching Origin Church this year and, my, the outpouring we have already experienced!  Our launch team continues to expand and the interest level continues to enlarge from families and couples everyday.  God is putting together a staff lead team that is second to none!  I realize that this could not be happening without simple obedience, risk, faith, trust, and a multitude of other team members with the same heartbeat.  This journey continues to be one of the most exhilarating experiences we have ever been a part of………….you need to come join our team!

img_0271We’ve got a launch team coming together with some of the most gifted, talented, and diverse individuals I have ever been around.  Team, Kim and I are loving getting to know you, walk alongside of you, and enjoying the thought of building a work together that will influence people to show them that God has this big plan for their lives.  Thanks for being on the journey with us.  We had a great time today!  You’re all fabulous!
